Goldman Sachs fraud

The Securities and Exchange Commission is accusing Goldman Sachs of “[creating] and [selling] a mortgage investment that was secretly devised to fail,” according to The New York Times. The investment in question, Abacus 2007-AC1, was the brainchild of hedge-funder John A. Paulson. The Times reports: “Goldman let Mr. Paulson select mortgage bonds that he wanted to bet against—the ones he believed were most likely to lose value—and packaged those bonds into Abacus 2007-AC1, according to the S.E.C. complaint. Goldman then sold the Abacus deal to unsecured loans investors like foreign banks, pension funds, insurance companies and other hedge funds.”Goldman is denying any wrongdoing. A statement to the paper noted that the investments “were popular with many investors prior to the financial crisis because they gave investors the ability to work with banks to design tailored securities which met their particular criteria.” However, according to charges from Robert Khuzami, director of the Division of Enforcement at the S.E.C., “Goldman wrongly permitted a client that was betting against the mortgage bad credit loans market to heavily influence which mortgage securities to include in an investment portfolio, while telling other investors that the securities were selected by an independent, objective third party.” Investors—maybe make that “former investors”—now appear to be betting against Goldman: The Wall Street Journal reports that the bank’s stock has already dropped 12 percent.

Fiona Apple

It’s been long enough since Fiona Apple’s second (and to date second-to-last) album was released in 1999 that there are probably some more recent fans of hers who were actually born after its release. Those fans could probably be forgiven, then, for balking at the recently announced title of Fiona’s upcoming fourth studio album—which, to be fair, is considerably unwieldy and perplexing. It is as follows:
The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do.
Tough one, sure. (For the record, Wikipedia defines an “idler wheel” as “a system used to transmit the rotation of the main shaft of a motor to another unsecured loans rotating device, for example the platter of a record-reproducing turntable or the crankshaft-to-camshaft gear train of an automobile,” if that helps.) But really, this is child’s play compared to that 1999 album:
When the pawn hits the conflicts he thinks like a king
What he knows throws the blows when he goes to the fight
And he’ll win the whole thing ‘fore he enters the ring
There’s no body to batter when your mind is your might
So when you go solo, you hold your own hand
And remember that depth is the greatest of heights
And if you know where you stand, then you know where to land
And if you fall it won’t matter, cause you’ll know that you’re right
No, those weren’t the lyrics to a song on the album—we bad credit loans don’t think so anyway, it’s been a while—that was actually the whole album title. By contrast, the 23-word new one might as well be Take Care or 21. Plus, it even has a singular central noun to make it easy to refer to in shorthand. “Hey, you guys got that Idler Wheel in stock yet?” Much less cumbersome and weird than “Hey, you guys got that When the Pawn…?”
C’mon, Fiona, you used to be challenging. Quit lobbing us these softballs.

Other highlights from the piece:
- When Wayne sat court-side at a recent Miami Heat/New Orleans Hornets game he was upset that Lebron James and Dwyane Wade never came over to talk to him. "Them niggas never speak to a nigga," he says. "They don't chuck me the deuce or nothing. Nigga spent all that money on them fucking tickets ... Come holla at me. We sit right by them little bitch-ass niggas. At least come ask me why I'm not rooting for you."

- He spent his final month in jail in solitary after he was bad credit loans caught with an iPod charger in his cell. It could have been worse: He also had a watch with an MP3 player on it, but another inmate took the rap. "He was a solid nigga," says Wayne. "Shout-out to Charles...Solitary was the worst. No TV. No radio. No commissary. Basically you're in there 23 hours a day." The only upside was he had a window where he could watch cars go by. "I used to sit at that motherfucker all day," he says.
